Savings Bonds
The U.S. Department of the Treasury will discontinue over-the-counter sales of paper savings bonds after December 31, 2011. This includes sales of savings bonds through financial institutions like Purdue Federal. This action, which supports the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s goal to increase the number of electronic transactions with citizens and businesses, will save American taxpayers approximately $70 million over the first five years. But savings bonds are not going away. Electronic savings bonds will remain available for purchase as electronic issues in TreasuryDirect®.
Opening a TreasuryDirect account is free at www.treasurydirect.gov. Bonds bought electronically through TreasuryDirect are safely maintained in your account with the U.S. Treasury. It’s convenient and secure.
