How to Save Money (Alpha Style)

Spring Break is so close, you can almost feel the sun on your skin. After the stress of classes, late-night cram sessions and ongoing life changes, you deserve a break. Before you hit the road on your Alpha adventure, there’s one important aspect to think about – money.

We’ve gathered some wolf pack-approved tips to help you save, spend smart and even make a little extra cash.

Practice Smart Saving Habits

Try the 50/30/20 rule:

  • 50% on essentials
  • 30% on fun stuff
  • 20% into savings

If you need to adjust the percentages to fit your situation, go for it! Save a little each week, and watch how it can add up over time.

Level Up Your Credit Game

Using credit responsibly can be a game changer. Plus, it’s easier than you think to get started.

Build That Credit Score
Using a credit card is an investment for your post-grad life. Regular, on-time payments help build your credit score, which could mean a better apartment, lower interest rates and even job opportunities later on.
Not sure where to start? Purdue Federal offers credit cards designed specifically for students, making it easy to get your foot in the door and build a solid financial foundation.

Safer Spending on the Go
Traveling with cash can be risky. Using a credit card while traveling offers more security. If you’re taking a spring break vacation, keep this in mind to protect your finances and avoid financial panics.

Healthy Spending Habits = Happy Wallet

No one likes the “oh no” moment when you realize you’ve overspent. We get that it can be tough sometimes, so here are a few tips to keep your finances in check:

  • Plan Your Meals – Eating out can drain your funds, so try to pack snacks on the go and cook simple meals.
  • Look for Student Discounts – Flash that student ID proudly! Many restaurants, retailers and subscription services offer special deals for college students. Be sure to take advantage of these
  • Track and Adjust – Use budgeting apps or your Purdue Federal mobile app to keep an eye on your expenses in real time.

Side Hustle the Sustainable Way

Extra cash goes a long way when saving for everyday items or spring break getaways. Some part time gigs aren’t the most sustainable or reliable. Consider these types of roles if you need a reliable job on the side.

  • Campus Jobs – Jobs on the Ivy Tech campus may be more understanding of your busy schedule and help work around the hours you’re available.
  • Local Businesses – These jobs can also offer more flexibility, while still giving reliable hours. These businesses could include nearby restaurants, retail stores, coffee shops, etc.

What’s most important here is that you choose a job that is manageable AND gives you the financial boost you need. It’s not just about hustling; it’s about working smarter to hit your goals.

Your Alpha Adventure Starts Now

While this is helpful if planning for an upcoming spring break trip, these same tips are good to practice year-round! By starting with simple saving habits and managing your spending wisely, you can make any of your adventurous dreams a reality.
