Prepping for Study Abroad

Are you considering heading out for a semester abroad? You’re not just gearing up for classes in a new location – you’re also signing up for an adventure of new cultures, friendships and memories to last a lifetime. Before you pack your suitcase and take off, there’s some important prep work to do. We’ve got your back with this handy to-do list!

1. Decide Where You’re Headed

Before anything, you have to first pick your study abroad program! Purdue™ has plenty of study abroad programs to choose from, so dream big and choose a spot that you feel is calling you the most. Research the programs, accommodations and cultural norms of your prospective destinations so that you feel fully prepared and ready for this commitment.

2. Check Your Passport and Visa Situation

Got a passport? Great! Now, when does it expire? Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the end date for your program. If you don’t have a passport, be sure to get on this as soon as possible!

Need a visa? Don’t procrastinate – it can be a process. Head to your program’s office or check the deadlines and requirements so you’re all set.

Pro Tip: Make digital and physical copies of your passport, visa and other important documents. You won’t want to stress about losing these things while abroad.

3. Take Care of Your Purdue Paperwork

Don’t forget to stay on top of all your Purdue responsibilities. Here are some things to keep in mind for when you return and continue towards graduation:

Credit Transfers and Course Approvals – ensure your courses count
Housing Arrangements – plan for where you’ll live when you return
Next Semester Enrollment – don’t forget to sign up for classes

4. Find Your Financial Mojo

Make sure your finances are in check before you jet off on your new adventure. Start with a budget and figure out how much you’ll need for rent, tuition, travel, food and fun (because weekend trips to another country or city? Yes, please!)

Need help sorting this all out? Purdue Federal is here for you!

Did you know Purdue Federal Credit Union offers:
  • Foreign currency exchange services
  • Simple-to-use digital banking
  • Easy money transfers
  • Budgeting tools to help you stick to your budget
Not to mention, Boiler Financial Track, Purdue’s financial wellness program, is available for personal financial coaching sessions if you want to go through things one-on-one.

Keep in mind, you might also be eligible for financial aid and scholarship opportunities. If you think this could come into play, look into it and mention it to your study abroad advisor.

5. Pack Like a Pro

While it may be tough, resist the urge to pack your entire wardrobe. Try to stick to essentials that will be easy to pair with multiple outfits. Bring weather appropriate outfits and staples (depending on your abroad location), comfortable walking shoes, power adapters for your electronics and a go-to comfort item (because sometimes you’ll want something familiar when you’re missing home.)

Leave room in your suitcase for souvenirs! You’ll want to bring back some cool items to remember your adventures.

6. Stay Connected

Before you leave, sort out your phone plan. Look into whether or not your phone carrier works overseas. If not, look into international SIM cards or other temporary plans.

Download apps that will help you stay connected with family and friends. While you want to stay present, it’s important to touch base with familiar faces to mitigate any homesickness. It’s all about balance.

You’re all set – Bon Voyage!

Now that you’ve got this to-do list, there’s nothing stopping you from making the most of your semester abroad. Go explore, learn and grow – and don’t forget to make some amazing memories along the way.

And before you take off, swing by Purdue Federal Credit Union to get your finances squared away. Adventures abroad are way more fun when you’re not stressing over money stuff back home.
