Blog: Five DIY Holiday Decor Ideas

You probably want some holiday cheer around this time of year, but décor can be pricey. You can save money and have fun with family by creating some homemade crafts and maybe even a few traditions along the way.

Cut paper snowflakes.

Paper snowflakes are an easy and affordable way to bring a blizzard inside and make your home look like a winter wonderland.

What you’ll need:

  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon, string or tape for hanging

How to make them:

This is where your creativity comes into play. Fold a piece of paper in half or in quarters and then cut until you can unfold into a snowflake. This might take a few tries. Once you’ve got the perfect snowflakes, hang them up to show them off.

Create pomander balls.

You might not know this name, but chances are, you’ve seen Pomander Balls before. They’re decorative oranges pierced with cloves. Not only are they a fun project, they’ll make your space smell nice for up to a week as they dry.

What you’ll need:

  • Large oranges
  • Whole cloves
  • Ribbon

How to make them:

Tie two pieces of ribbon around the whole orange, with the ribbons crossing on the bottom and tying a bow at the top. Then, simply stick the cloves into the orange until the visible parts are covered. Use more ribbon to hang your pomander ball wherever you’d like.

Link together a paper chain.

A great activity for families, you can create a colorful holiday classic in just a few minutes.

What you’ll need:

  • Colorful paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape

How to make it:

Cut your colorful paper into strips. Tape the first strip into a circle. Then, link the other strips by taping them into circles that attach to the previous circle.

Freeze an ice lantern.

You can make the most of winter weather by creating a beautiful ice lantern for your outdoor space!

What you’ll need:

  • Medium or large plastic container
  • Plastic cup
  • Tea candles
  • Lighter

How to make it:

Set the plastic cup inside the larger plastic container. Fill the cup with water, and then the container. You could add berries or greenery to the water in the large container if you want. Let the water freeze outside overnight or in a freezer. Then, run warm water over the outside of the large container to remove the lantern from the mold. Place a candle in the open center space and light.

Build a snowman.

A no-sew snowman is a cute (and warm) addition to your winter décor that can be made with items you probably already have around the house.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 white sock
  • 1 sock in color for the hat
  • rice
  • rubber bands (or thread)
  • buttons
  • ribbons
  • glue gun
  • markers or paint

How to make it:

Fill your white sock with rice to reach the desired size. Close it up at the top with a rubber band. Then, place another rubber band around the center to create the sections of the snowman. Place the “sock hat” on top to cover the top rubber band. Then, decorate as you’d like!
