Sometimes, someone you care about needs help managing their finances.

When a loved one needs extra support, managing finances can become part of that responsibility. A Power of Attorney allows you to step in and help.

What is Power of Attorney (POA)?

Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that gives an agent the authority to act on behalf of the principal. This may include managing finances, accessing accounts or handling certain legal or financial tasks, depending on the powers granted. An agent will only be able to access accounts and services by having their role as POA noted on the account.

Who can access the account?

We are required to follow legal and compliance guidelines to ensure the agent acts only within the authority granted in the document. If granted financial powers, the agent can access and manage the accounts, such as:

  • View account balances
  • Make deposits and withdrawals
  • Write checks
  • Be issued a debit card in their name
  • Receive account statements and notices
  • Access a safe deposit box

What you'll need

Either the principal, or the agent using a Power of Attorney document, may open an account on behalf of the principal. Please contact us to learn more about POA membership eligibility.

You must provide the following documents:

  • Signed and notarized POA documents
  • Principal's identification, such as a valid government-issued ID. Please contact us for alternative documentation options.
  • Agent's identification, such as a valid government-issued ID
  • If you are a successor agent, documentation showing the primary agent is unable or unwilling to serve
  • If POA is only effective upon incapacity, a physician's statement or appropriate medical documentation as outlined in the POA document. Agent will be required to provide additional identification information.
